How big does it actually get?

Bigger than the app shows, but not very large. Instagram saves a few sizes of every profile picture and uses the smallest one almost everywhere in the app. You get the largest size they have.

There is a limit, though. If someone uploaded a small picture in the first place, the small version is the only one that exists. Making it larger will only make it blurry, because no website can add detail that was never in the picture.

A good reason to use this

The most common honest reason is to check whether an account is fake.

Fake accounts copy the photo of a real person. At the small size Instagram shows, the copy looks the same as the original. At full size the differences usually become obvious. The picture may be cut at a different point, or it may look rough because people have saved and re-posted it several times.

So if you are trying to decide whether an account really belongs to the person it names, this is a reasonable way to check.

And a reason not to

This should be said plainly. Do not use it to follow a stranger, to collect information about someone’s life, or to get closer to a person who has not asked to hear from you. That is not what this page is for.

A picture being public does not mean the person owes you anything. If you would not be comfortable telling them why you wanted their photo, that is your answer.
